Valentine's Day

Food Lovers Hate Waste this Valentine’s. • Need a recipe for a Valentines meal? • Want to save yourself some money to spend on someone special? imageCome along and pick up some recipe ideas for your Valentine’s meal from some of our food waste “cupids” on Friday February 12th. Waste officers from Suffolk’s local authorities will be on hand to help romantic residents cook up a feast by advising how to reduce food waste on Valentine’s Day. Wouldn’t you rather spend the £50 that you could save every month, on someone special rather than throwing it in the bin? Come along to the following locations at Friday lunchtime to find out how; • Brandon Country Park, Brandon • The Arc, Bury St Edmunds • The Buttermarket Shopping Centre, Ipswich • The Guineas, Newmarket • Waitrose, Sudbury • Solar, Great Eastern Square, Felixstowe Tips on how to have a green Valentine’s Day: Councillor Lisa Chambers, Portfolio Holder for Waste at Suffolk County Council says “Families can save up to £50 a month by following tips to waste less food, such as using your freezer more and sticking to shopping lists. On Valentine’s Day, those savings could mean an extra romantic gift for your loved one.” • Rather than giving presents, try a thoughtful experience which doesn't create waste - such as a romantic trip to the theatre, naming a rose or adopting an animal at a local zoo. • Send Valentine's e-cards this year rather than buying cards from a shop and save paper. • Buying chocolates? Avoid ones which are over packaged and make sure you recycle the box afterwards. • After you've enjoyed that bottle of champagne, don't forget to recycle the glass at your local Household Waste Recycling Centre or community recycling facility. • If you're cooking for your loved one, don't buy or cook too much food - almost 1/3 of our food ends up being thrown away - what a waste! • Don't forget to take your reusable bags when out shopping for gifts and Valentine's food and say no to plastic bags. • When the big event is all over and the flowers are past their best, remember to compost them either at home or using your local Household Waste Recycling Centre. Email us before 17th Feb at suffolk.recycling@suffolk.gov.uk with your tips for a greener Valentine's Day and you could win some fairtrade chocolate! As well as coming to collect your recipes, also visit lovefoodhatewaste.com for advice on how to save your money and also some brilliant leftover meals for the Valentine's weekend.
