Recycling 'on the go' in Ipswich

Recycling on the go!

imageFollowing a successful introduction of 3 trial "recycling on the go" twin litter and recycling bins, a further 25 twin bins are to be installed in the town centre of Ipswich (March 09). These new bins will enable visitors to recycle their litter and continue good recycling habits whilst on the go! The new twin bins have one side for litter and one side for recyclables, coloured black and blue in keeping with the domestic wheeled bins familiar to Ipswich residents. Most of us are now in the habit of recycling wherever possible and the new twin bins will enable recycling of some items of litter that would have previously been sent to landfill. The bins have coloured logo's showing the suitable items for the blue side of the bin, which are newspapers and other clean paper, plastic bottles and drinks cans. There will be 25 of the new style bins strategically placed in the town centre which should assist us in diverting some of the litter produced each day from landfill. The contents of the two sides will be kept seperate when emptied, the recycling side will be checked for contamination and the remaining good quality recyclables will be sent off for processing at the Viridor owned materials recycling facility (MRF) at Gt Blakenham. The new bins are of a traditional style manufactured in steel, incorporating an ashtray unit on the litter side. The bins have been built to a specific design for Ipswich and will be a useful and attractive addition to the streetscene. Where possible the older style existing "litter only" bins will be removed to make way for the new style bins, though some will remain in-situ to maintain the capacity of litter disposal facilities within the town.
