  • Roll out of new recycling and refuse service continues
    Friday 24 April 2009
    Applies to: Suffolk Coastal

Improved recycling service bins have been rolled out to 6,000 more homes in Suffolk Coastal and collections will start with the grey-lidded bin being emptied next week. Over three quarters of the district’s residents will be able to recycle their household waste from the comfort of their own home thanks to the latest expansion of the improved service. “From next week residents in Woodbridge, Brightwell, Foxhall and Bucklesham, and parts of Kesgrave, Rushmere St Andrew and Martlesham, will receive the improved recycling service, which will give them more recycling options,” said Cllr Andrew Nunn, Cabinet Member for the Green Environment. “Homes in Suffolk Coastal recycled 48.5 per cent of their rubbish in 2008/09, compared to the national average in England of 34.5 per cent. By making it easy and convenient to recycle, the new bins are helping to divert even more of the district’s recyclable household waste away from landfill. “Not only is this excellent for the environment and for industries that use recycled materials, it is great news for local authorities. Landfill tax will continue to rise in the next few years, and by reducing the amount of rubbish that unnecessarily ends up in landfill sites, vital savings will be made,” added Cllr Nunn. Cans, tins, foil, plastic containers and paper can be recycled in the new blue-lidded bin, along with cardboard, which can also go into the brown bin with garden waste, cooked and uncooked food and shredded paper. The grey-lidded wheeled bin, which will replace the black sack service, is for household waste that cannot be recycled, and will be collected fortnightly, with the recycling bins emptied the following week. As food waste can go in the brown bin as well as the grey-lidded bin, this means that food waste can still be collected every week. “Suffolk Coastal is already looking ahead to the next phase of the rollout, which will add 6,000 more homes, bringing the total in the district up to 48,000. Those households that will be affected by this next phase of the rollout will be notified next month. “In the meantime, I encourage residents who have not yet received the improved service to make the most of what is available to them at their local recycling banks and the three Household Waste Recycling Centres in the district at Foxhall Road, Foxhall, Leiston’s Lovers Lane and Carr Road, Felixstowe,” added Cllr Nunn.
