Each year UK householders throw away 8.3 million tonnes of food and drink and it’s not just vegetable peelings and tea bags. Most of this is good food and drink like bread, meat, cheese, salad, milk and fizzy drinks that we simply have not got around to consuming. In fact, we waste £12 billion worth of good food every year. Each month, the average Suffolk family with children throws away over £50 worth of food that was bought, but not eaten. European Week for Waste Reduction (21st - 29th November) aims to raise the profile of waste reduction. Everyone is being encouraged to change their behaviour to reduce waste at home and in the work place. To promote European Week for Waste Reduction, Suffolk Waste Partnership will be holding a series of roadshows at locations across Suffolk, bringing the Love Food Hate Waste campaign direct to shoppers. Shoppers who visit one of the Love Food Hate Waste roadshows will be able to pick up a free cotton shopping bag, a useful kitchen gadget and a copy of the Love Food Hate Waste quiz, designed to test their knowledge and help save money on food shopping bills. Councillor Roy Barker, spokesperson for the Suffolk Waste Partnership says, “It is vital that we all try to reduce the amount of food waste we send to landfill as it is harmful to the environment and a terrible waste of resources. The Love Food Hate Waste campaign is helping everyone enjoy more of their food, save money and help to protect our environment”. Love Food Hate Waste Roadshows will be taking place at the following locations: Saturday, 21st November Bury Road Park & Ride, 9am to 12 noon London Road Park & Ride, 9am to 12 noon Wednesday, 25th November Bury St Edmunds Market Place, 9am to 3.30pm Thursday, 26th November Stowmarket " Market Place, 10am to 2pm Saturday, 28th November Martlesham Park & Ride, 9am to 12 noon London Road Park & Ride, 9am to 12 noon For top tips on planning, storing, cooking, and enjoying the food you buy and for tasty recipe ideas, visit the Suffolk Waste Partnership website at www.suffolkrecycling.org.uk and click on the Love Food Hate Waste link.
