Hidden batteries cause real fires.
There has been a sharp rise in the number of fires fuelled by wrongly disposed batteries and electronic items.
Statistics from the National Fire Chiefs Council suggest that there were over 1,200 preventable battery fires across the UK in 2023, up by over 70% from 2022.
Read on to find out how you can help.

You can help by recycling your batteries (and items that contain them) correctly. Help us reduce the risk of fire and keep site staff safe.
How?
If you have an item with a battery you can remove (such as some toys, power tools, alarm clocks and remote controls), please do the following:
- Remove the battery (and do this at home first to save you time at the Recycling Centre).
- Place the battery in the designated battery container at the Recycling Centre.
- Place the item (without the battery) in the correct container - please ask site staff if unsure.
If you have an item with a battery you can't remove (such as electric toothbrushes, chargers, laptops, toys, sealed electronics), please do the following:
- Put the item in the Small Appliances container at the Recycling Centre.
